One of my all time favorite movies is the Dead Poets Society, directed by Peter Weir. If you haven't heard about this movie, well you've been living under a rock for the past 29(ish) years. I can't pin point what it is about this movie in particular, but it gets me every time. You'll feel all the feels.
I'm not going to lie, it's been a week. I needed a pick me up and what better place to look than to one of my favorite movies. I know this is a bit of a random post, but today I wanted to share some inspiring quotes that I found from Dead Poets Society. So whether you need a little bit of inspiration or just looking for reassurance about why this may be one of the greatest movies ever, keep reading to for some amazing quotes.
"No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world." As a student and young adult, it can be easy to fall into a trap of "nothing I can do matters". But as Mr. Keating tells his students, everything you do matters. This quote really came to life to me just a few days ago as thousands of students across the country left their classrooms to memorialize the lives lost in Parkland, Florida and to stand up for stricter gun control. And guess what, it's our words and ideas that really will change the world.
"Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all." We are worthy of speaking our thoughts, of being heard. But we must do it now. We can't wait until a better time, because that better time may never come.
"When you read, don't just consider what the author thinks, consider what you think." We are a lot smarter and more powerful than we often give ourselves credit for. We don't need to rely on thinking what other people think, our own thoughts and ideas are worthy on their own.
"Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary." This is probably one of the most classic Keating quotes out there. While many people the "seize the day" part of this quote to heart (and don't get me wrong, I do too), I also pay attention to the word "Make". To put it bluntly, no one else is going to make your life amazing, you need to do it for yourself. And guess what, you are fully and completely capable of doing so.
Thanks for reading this kind of rambl-y post. And please, if you haven't seen this movie, it's on Netflix and I recommend watching ASAP.
XOXO,
Samantha
