If you read my last post, you would know that this summer I am working at a day camp. I am just finishing up my second week of work, and there are so many things I have learned.
Before I start, I wanted to tell you guys why I chose to work at a camp. I don't particularly love kids, but I do love the satisfaction teaching them gives you. Almost every day after school, I tutor elementary and middle school children in math and other subjects. I always find that job so rewarding and fun. When I had to think of what I was going to do this summer, I thought about working with children in a different way. Now, instead of teaching them, I am helping them grow and develop. The 5 and 6 year olds I work with are very tiny- most don't even remember to go to the bathroom. The second reason I chose to work with kids is because I believe I am a lifelong learner. I love learning new things and gaining new experiences. I know I will never stop trying new things and bettering myself as a person.
With those two things being said, here is what I have learned in the past 2 weeks...
1. Kids are fearless - One of my campers moved here last week from Japan, and she does not speak a word of English. At first, I was terrified-- I had no way of communicating with her. As the days went on, she started learning how to communicate. I think she is having the best time this summer than any of the other girls in my group. After this summer, my camper will have learned a good amount of English, and she will have proved that she can tackle anything.
2. Kids like to let loose in healthy ways - One of my group's favorite activities is having a dance party. They go all out crazy and are exhausted by the end. I can guarantee you that nobody my age would choose to have a dance party.
3. You can get kids excited for almost anything - My kids hate sports. Absolutely hate it. But, if I am excited about going to the activity and participating, my campers get excited too! I find this crazy, but it works!
4. Children are exhausting - I have to be at camp at 8:15 and don't get out of work until 4:30. I have no breaks, and 6-7 campers climbing all over me. I come home exhausted. I have never had better night sleeps. As cute as kids are, they require a TON of attention and energy!
Those were some of the things I have learned from working at camp this summer. I truly did not know any of these things before going into the job (I know, I probably should have done my homework).
These past two weeks have been eye-opening, and I am interested in what the future weeks bring!
Happy weekend guys:)
XOXO,
Jordan
