I know I often use the term "Beauty Blender" to mean any makeup sponge, but (as you probably know) Beauty Blenders are real, actual, trademarked sponges, that cost about $20 each. Maybe this is just me, but I think $20 is a little pricey for 1 makeup sponge, so I thought I would investigate to see if they're really worth their price tag!
So, at Sephora, the original Beauty Blender is $20 and claims that its "unique shape and exclusive material available only with BeautyBlender ensures impeccable, streak-free application with minimum product waste". For comparison purposes, I also tested out a CVS brand reusable makeup sponge ($3) and a Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge ($5).
I really do love the material that the Beauty Blender is made out of; compared to the others, this one was much firmer and held up against more product. This sponge was able to apply a thicker coat and did not absorb as much product. I liked that the Beauty Blender didn't give when I applied pressure to it which made it extremely easy to use.
As for the "unique shape" claim, my response is "yeah, right?!" said extremely sarcastically. Every single sponge I saw at CVS had the exact same shape. They are all tear drops shaped, with a much finer end perfect for spot concealing and then a thicker end perfect for applying foundation on larger areas. So as you can tell, in terms of the shape, I saw absolutely no difference between the Beauty Blender and other brands.
In terms of application, I also didn't see a huge difference between the brands. The Beauty Blender was able to apply a thicker coat on the first coat, however it was still very easy to build up a thicker coat using the other sponges. The Beauty Blender didn't absorb as much product, but it when I washed the sponge for the first time, a TON of product still came out (which kind of bugs me because I feel like I'm wasting a lot of product).
So is the Beauty Blender worth it? In my opinion, not really. Although I did like the material a little better, I couldn't justify spending 15 extra dollars when the other sponges were completely workable.
Let me know in the comments below what you thought's are about Beauty Blenders vs other reusable makeup sponges, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
