La Jolla, California Travel Guide

Today, I actually have an updated version of my La Jolla Travel Guide that I posted almost two (!) years ago. I was able to take another trip this year and I loved it just as much. Seriously guys, La Jolla is amazing - beaches, shops, amazing views, and it's super close to San Diego if you want to see some more of SoCal.

What to pack -
  • A light sweatshirt - It was surprisingly cold when we were there and nights can get a little chilly so a light sweatshirt/sweater is a must.
  • A bathing suit - Obviously!
  • Workout/ yoga clothes - I’ll get to this in a little bit, but I think with a gym/studio at every corner this is a necessity.
  • Running shoes - There are a ton of cliffs and cool trails to run/hike on.
  • Golf wear - If you golf, I don’t, but if you do there are a ton of great golf courses out there.

Places to stay -
    • A Quick Note - Guys I'm not going to try and hide it, La Jolla is an expensive city. It is possible to travel there on a budget, so if you're looking to save a little money I would recommend opting for renting an Air B&B or something like that.
    • The Lodge At Torrey Pines - This is a great hotel 15 minutes from downtown La Jolla. It has a beautiful pool and is home to the Torrey Pines Gold Course. It does have 2 onsite restaurants, but I recommend checking out some of the places in town.
    • The Inn By The Sea - This is another great hotel walking distance from the beach and downtown La Jolla. It has a pool and all the usual amenities, including one onsite restaurant.

    Things to do -
    • Yoga at Trilogy Sanctuary- Trilogy Sanctuary is right in the middle of downtown La Jolla and get this, THEY DO ROOFTOP AERIAL YOGA. They also have tons of rooftop Vinyasa Flow classes, but if you’re not afraid of being upside down I couldn’t recommend anything more than the Sky Yoga (aerial yoga).
    • Shop - Downtown La Jolla is a gorgeous place to shop with tons of little boutiques and even a few major stores (Lulu Lemon + Benefit).
    • Kayak + Surf - There are a ton of services that offer kayaking and surfing in the ocean (along with tons of other ocean activities). The beaches are gorgeous and this is a great way to spend an afternoon.
    • Hike - The Torrey Pines Reserve is an open nature reserve with gorgeous trails through the hills and down by the beach for hiking, running, and biking.
    • Go to the zoo - The San Diego Zoo isn’t too far from La Jolla, so if you have the time I definitely recommend visiting it.

    What to eat -
    • Trilogy Sanctuary Cafe - At Trilogy Sanctuary they have such a cute, organic cafe. Most of the options are vegan and are super healthy for you. I recommend the Shine Superfruit Smoothie - it’s amazing.
    • George’s Ocean Terrace - This is an amazing restaurant with rooftop, outdoor seating that overlooks the ocean. I've actually been to this restaurant both times I've been in La Jolla, and it has been fabulous both times. I recommend the chips + slasa, the black bean + quinoa veggie burger, or the pork tacos.
    • Eddie V’s - Literally like 3 doors down from George’s there’s Eddie’s. They have excellent steak and I don’t eat seafood but those who did said it was amazing.
    • Jake's - About 20 minutes from downtown La Jolla towards Del Mar is this amazing beachside restaurant. It's a classic surf-and-turf kind of place that is always packed (so I would recommend trying to get a recommendation). If you go here staying for dessert and ordering the Hula Pie is a must (imagine a gigatic slice of ice cream cake with cookie crust, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and macadamia nuts).
    • Galaxy Tacos - On every street, there is at least one taco place. Everywhere we tried was amazing but Galaxy Tacos is right by the beach, in La Jolla Shores, and perfect for an after-surfing snack.
    • Sugar and Scribe - This is a trendy cafe in downtown La Jolla. They were pretty much packed all day, but the wait was never super long (they have tons of seating). Stay for brunch and then grab a peanut butter cookie on the way out (they're amazing).
    • Ohana Cafe - This is a cute surf cafe type place in downtown La Jolla. They make delicious hawaiian inspired meals. I also recommend their shaved ice (can you tell that I'm a dessert person, lol), they have tons of flavors but blue raspberry, pina colada, and lemonade were our favorites.

Ok so these are my tips, ideas, and recommendations for a trip to La Jolla. If you've been to La Jolla, share your recommendations down below, I'd love to hear them!

    XOXO,

    Samantha
